A diagnosis or a continued health problem can overwhelm us. We may feel like we are the only ones going through these circumstances. But God is with us! These short Bible verses for healing and strength will encourage you through challenging times.
What does the Bible say about healing?
The Bible is not silent on healing, and there are many accounts of healing in the Bible, as in 1 Kings 17:22, Matthew 12:22, and Acts 28:8. Our God can heal, and He often does heal us of minor and major illnesses. We can trust God with all of our troubles, and indeed, ask for His deliverance. It is up to the Lord what the answer will be. Sometimes, the deliverance will be getting through it with His grace and strength, instead of being healed from our illnesses. Read more in these short Bible verses for healing and strength.
James 5:14-15
“Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.”
God calls the church, His body of believers, to pray for those who are sick. He wants us to trust Him to answer that prayer according to His will.
The Expositor’s Bible Commentary (Abridged Edition): New Testament makes an interesting point about the phrase, “anointing him with oil.” It points out that “oil was one of the most common medicines of biblical times.” The commentator then adds, “It is evident, then, that James is prescribing prayer and medicine.”
God is able to heal without medicine. He still does miracles! But He also can use the medicines and treatments available to us to bring about the healing.
Luke 9:11
“But the multitudes, perceiving it, followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them of God’s Kingdom, and he cured those who needed healing.”
Jesus’ ministry here on earth including healing. Many of those afflicted had little hope of being healed, given the progress and availability of medical care to them. This caused the multitudes to believe that He was from God.
Psalm 147:3
“He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.”
The Lord sees not only our physical ailments, but the ones in our hearts. He will bring healing to the broken places in our lives.
Philippians 3:20-21
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will change the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of his glory, according to the working by which he is able even to subject all things to himself.”
Our goal isn’t to have a trouble-free life, no matter how much we try to convince God to the contrary. What we live for is our citizenship in heaven and our relationship with our Savior. This body may fail but the Lord will not.
Psalm 91:14-15
“Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him. I will set him on high, because he has known my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him, and honor him.”
God loves us and will ultimately deliver us with His salvation. We may not be delivered of every trouble in our time here on earth. But He will always be with us, and we are never alone.

Short Bible Verses for Strength
We may not feel strong enough for each day during these trials, but God will provide it in abundance for us.
Isaiah 40:29
“He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.”
We may not feel like we have power, but the Lord does! Many of us try to get by on our own strength, but the Lord provides strength to the weary.
Psalm 46:1
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
The Lord is with us and will strengthen us. We can rest in Him as our refuge. Our response to trouble should be to run to Him!
Psalm 138:3
“In the day that I called, you answered me. You encouraged me with strength in my soul.”
Some of these verses mention strengthening our bodies, but this one emphasizes strengthening our soul. The Lord encourages us in our hearts and minds with His strength to get through what troubles us.
Ephesians 6:10
“Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.”
We don’t need to be strong in ourselves, or put our trust in what the world has to offer. We can be strong in Him, our mighty God!
2 Timothy 2:1
“You therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.”
Our strength not only comes from the mightiness of our God, but also from the grace that is found in Jesus Christ. We cannot stand before God without the grace of Jesus Christ.

A Prayer for a Sick Friend
Dear Lord,
We come before You, our merciful God, to ask for healing. We do not want to have this burden. We do not want to go through this trial, and most of the time, we don’t understand it.
We ask for Your deliverance from this condition, and from the pain it is bringing. We believe You can do this! We ask for Your perfect will to be accomplished through this. We trust You with what lies ahead.
Whatever is done, Lord God, we love You and we want to glorify You. May You be honored in our lives.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
