Being a dad can sometimes feel overwhelming. Thankfully, fathers (and everyone!) can turn to God for everything that concerns them.
These scriptures to pray for fathers can be a helpful way to get started in prayer, as you pray for yourself as a father, or pray for a dad you know.
Praying Bible verses about a situation can guide you toward praying God’s heart over a situation, rather than just “advising” God on what you think He should do.

Scriptures to Pray for Fathers
Whether it’s Father’s Day, or any other day of the year, it’s always a good idea to be in prayer for parents, whether you’re the dad or you’re praying for another dad.
These prayer points can be useful for Bible studies, men’s prayer groups, church prayer meetings and Father’s Day celebrations or church events, or your own personal quiet time.
The themes included in scriptures to pray for fathers are: God’s Guidance in Leading a Family, Patience and Understanding in Parenting, Healing and Restoration in Relationships, and Wisdom as a Parent.
While we chose these themes specifically for dads, we tried to make them general enough to pray for any parent. We did the same with scriptures to pray for mothers. This is to give you the versatility you might need when planning a prayer time for parents.
These prayer points are available as individual prayer point sheets. You’ll find the link to these FREE printable prayer sheets at the end of this article.
God’s Guidance in Leading a Family
Ask God to equip each family for strong and loving family leadership.
Pray for God to guide the family. “A man’s steps are established by the LORD. He delights in his way. Though he stumble, he shall not fall, for the LORD holds him up with his hand.” Psalm 37:23-24 WEBBE
Ask God for His instruction. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.” Psalm 32:8
Pray to trust in God, even when it’s hard to understand. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 WEBBE
Ask God for His wisdom in parenting. “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5
Pray to be led by the Holy Spirit. “However, when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming.” John 16:13
Ask God for help in living a just, merciful, and humble life. “He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8 WEBBE
Patience and Understanding in Parenting
Being a parent often requires patience and understanding! We can find those in the Lord.
Pray to bear each other in love. “With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love,” Ephesians 4:2
Ask God to build these godly qualities into your heart. “Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance.” Colossians 3:12
Pray to be slow in anger. “He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a quick temper displays folly.” Proverbs 14:29
Ask God to help you be a good listener. “So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.” James 1:19-20
Pray for a love full of patience. “Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil;” 1 Corinthians 13:4-5
Ask God for help in enduring troubles. “Rejoicing in hope, enduring in troubles, continuing steadfastly in prayer,” Romans 12:12
Pray to abound in the fruit of the Holy Spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23
Healing and Restoration in Relationships
Sometimes parent/child relationships need restoration. Pray over these relationships.
Pray for a forgiving heart. “Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.” Colossians 3:13
Ask God to help you put away bitterness and grudge-holding. “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:31-32
Pray for guidance on what you might need to do to be reconciled. “If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” Matthew 5:23-24
Ask God to keep you faithful in prayer over these relationships. “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.” James 5:16
Pray that we would follow God’s example of reconciliation. “But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation; namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses, and having committed to us the word of reconciliation.” 2 Corinthians 5:18-19
Ask God to help you love someone you need to forgive. “And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8
Pray that you would not gossip or do other things that might hinder reconciliation. “He who covers an offense promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.” Proverbs 17:9
Wisdom as a Parent
It’s not always clear what to do as a parent. Use these verses to pray for wisdom.
Pray for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding from the Lord. “For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:6 WEBBE
Ask God to give you the wisdom you need as a parent. “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5
Pray to value wisdom, and pursue it. “Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7
Ask God to help wait on Him for what you need as a parent. “But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 WEBBE
Pray to grow in reverence and awe of the Lord, and grow in understanding. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. All those who do his work have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!” Psalm 111:10 WEBBE
