12 Free Printable Sermon Notes for Adults (And Kids, Too!)

Have you found that taking sermon notes helps you process the sermon better and remember the main points? For me, it makes a world of difference.

I am someone who learns by writing things down. Even if I never look at the notes I take again, I find that I am able to concentrate on a sermon, a talk, or a class if I am writing down key points or observations.

That’s why I wanted to feature some of the best printable sermon notes for adults (and kids, too!) that I could find. I’m offering a few from my site, as well as highlighting some that others have offered on their sites.

I’m also showing some alternatives to printable sermon notes, in case you like the idea of processing the sermon this way but want to explore some other methods to sermon note taking.

Other Options for Sermon Notes

Sermon Note Journals. Would you rather have a book to keep your notes in? There are several sermon notes journals available. Find some popular sermon notes journals here. There are even options for kids’ sermon notes journals.

If your church already offers printed notes, get a notebook that corresponds with the most common size of notes your church uses. That would mean you would probably pick up an 8 ½ x 11 or 5 ½ x 8 ½ notebook.

Take Notes in Your Bible. Do you like journaling in your Bible? One option I’ve used personally is to journal my sermon notes in my Bible.

I am one of those people who have a “Sunday bag” for the items I need to take to church. One of my Bibles lives in that bag, with a dark Bible cover so it doesn’t show wear. I also grab it when I am going to other ministry events outside of the home where I want to take notes.

Because the margins are wide, I usually have plenty of room to add notes with my favorite journaling pen from the sermon or talk I am hearing. I am also not afraid to use washi tape to tape in notes from an event.

I have a separate Bible for sermon note taking as I like to journal in one particular Bible at home, and I feel freer to journal more personally at home if I have a separate Bible for taking notes outside of the house.

Not everyone feels comfortable writing in their Bible, and that is totally fine. But writing in a Bible doesn’t mean that you disrespect God’s Word. For me, it’s another way to interact with God’s Word and the Biblical encouragement I receive from preachers and teachers in my life.

Take Notes on Your Device. Using your phone or tablet can be a little controversial, especially among the older saints. And you might find that notifications on your device can be distracting.

But if you feel like it will help you, and you are able to ignore notifications on your device, use your phone or tablet to take notes in your notes app or in an annotation app, like Goodnotes.

Many of these .pdfs or .jpgs can be loaded into an annotation app, or even a drawing app, and “written on” with a text box or using the appropriate stylus for your device.

Taking sermon notes can significantly enhance engagement and retention of the message, whether an adult or a child.

There are various methods available, from printable templates to journaling in your Bible or using digital devices. Choose the method that best suits your learning style and preferences.

Remember, the goal is to actively participate in the sermon, process the information, and apply it to your life. By exploring these options, you can find a way to make the most of each message you hear.
