Prayer Points and Prayers for Feeling Overwhelmed

Prayers for Feeling Overwhelmed (7) 1 set of hands clasped in prayer on an open Bible

When you feel overwhelmed, it can be difficult to start praying, or to feel like you can find the right words. Sometimes, in a time of need, it’s hard to get out much beyond, “Lord, please help me!” And this is an acceptable prayer to our Lord Jesus – He just wants to hear from us and depend on Him!

But if you are looking for something that adequately expresses your heart, these sample prayers are here to help you pray, either by praying along, or using it as inspiration when you are speaking with God in prayer.

These prayers contain Scriptures from God’s Word. Including Bible verses in your prayers is a great way to ensure that you are not praying just out of your own selfish desires, but from a position that builds your faith in the Lord.

Prayer of Surrender and Hope in the Lord

Prayers for Feeling Overwhelmed (5) 1 set of hands clasped in prayer on top of a Bible

It can be easy to hold onto the big, big problems that face us. There are times where we can actually do some problem-solving and improve our circumstances. This should be done after praying and asking God for His guidance and strength.

Other times, in the midst of chaos, we can do very little to change our circumstances, and must prayerfully wait for the Lord to bring about His will for what faces us.

This prayer to surrender our circumstances to the Lord and to place our hope in Him is a great way to settle our hearts before God.

Dear God,

We come before You today, feeling overwhelmed and worn out. Whether it’s a hard time in our minds, or difficult circumstances, we approach You to lay down our burdens at Your feet.

1 Peter 5:7 tells us to be “casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.” May we embrace this truth and give our worries to You, trusting You to do Your work. Our worries do not change anything, but our righteous prayers to You can change everything.

When we are concerned with matters that we should put aside, remind us of Colossians 3:2, to

“Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.”

When we are overwhelmed, show us where we are focusing on things that don’t ultimately matter. Give us wisdom as to what are things that matter to You. And grant us perspective on what seems so important right now, but won’t even matter in a month or two.

We are so thankful for Your grace and mercy in our lives. We may be overwhelmed, but we can look to Your Word and be encouraged. You equip us every day.

Lamentations 3:22-24 says that “It is because of The LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I will hope in him.”

Help us to put our hope in You. May we experience Your peace and joy in even the most overwhelming circumstances, knowing that You are our portion, and You are enough.

We are so thankful that no matter what we are going through, that You love us. Romans 8:38-39 tells us, “For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Even in our most stressful times, may we find joy and hope in that truth from Your Word. May we know and feel Your steadfast love in our lives. May we share the truth of Your love as we share the Gospel with others.

You tell us so many times in Your Word to not worry. Psalm 94:19 says that “In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.” We are thankful for that.

When we give our requests to You, we may still face the same circumstances. But we can face it with Your peace and Your protection. We don’t need to face our overwhelming circumstances with worry and strife. We can face our circumstances with You.

Finally, we surrender these things that we are overwhelmed by to You. We may not like facing them, but we know that You will use them for Your purposes. Help us to trust in Your plan, as we read in Romans 8:28.

“We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

May we face today with hope, joy, and purpose as we trust in You for Your plan today. May we feel Your strength and Your love as we face our current struggles. And may we not fear the future, but look forward to what You will do in our lives.

We ask this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Prayer Points for Feeling Overwhelmed

If praying through someone else’s written prayer isn’t your style, then these prayer points for feeling overwhelmed can give you a structure to pray through in your own words.

Pray for peace of mind. Philippians 4:6-7 is a favorite verse for anyone who is worried or anxious. When dealing with racing thoughts about overwhelming worries, this Scripture can provide great encouragement on how to find God’s peace.

“In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

We can give our prayer request to the Lord, with thanksgiving, and He will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Our hold on this matter may be something we can give to God on the first try, but other times, we need to keep surrendering our request to the Lord.

Pray to have faith in this turbulent sea of life. Matthew 8:24-26 says, “Behold, a violent storm came up on the sea, so much that the boat was covered with the waves; but he was asleep. The disciples came to him and woke him up, saying, ‘Save us, Lord! We are dying!’ He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?’ Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the sea, and there was a great calm.”

As we surrender to God to let Him grow our faith, we will come upon many moments where we need to make the decision to trust God or trust ourselves.

The disciples did the right thing to reach out to Jesus to solve their problem, and the Lord answered their prayers according to His perfect will.

Pray for a peaceful heart. We read in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.”

Jesus spoke these words to the disciples around the time of the Last Supper, when He was trying to equip them for the trials that lay ahead. Talk about overwhelming circumstances! Jesus wanted them to trust in His peace, and remind them it wasn’t like the world’s peace.

Our troubled heart can be deceptive, and add worry upon worry to our minds. Pray to trust in the peace of Jesus Christ.

Prayer Against Anxiety and Worry When Feeling Overwhelmed

We can struggle with anxious thoughts and crushing worry when we are overwhelmed by life’s problems. This prayer targets the anxiety and worry that we may feel during those times.

O Lord,

We are concerned with the problems that lay before us, and even the problems that possibly could happen. Help us to cast our cares on You, and not dwell on them. Guide us to the action You want us to take, and help us to leave it in Your hands.

John 14:26 says, “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.”

Thank You for reminding us that we are never alone. Please remind our hearts of Your Word and Your promises. Help us to follow You and not our own feelings.

We read in 2 Timothy 1:7 KJV that “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Help us not to live in fear, but to work in Your power, by Your love, with a sound mind.

When we struggle with problems that we don’t want to trust to You, remind us to  instead be “throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5

Guide our hearts and minds to submit every thought to You, that we could glorify You in our thoughts through this trial, and have a mind at peace.

Thank You for being bigger than our problems, for Your love and care for us, and for Your perfect will!

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
