Prayer Points for Finding Strength in God
When we desperately need strength, God wants us to turn to Him. He wants us to cry out to Him, and He will hear us!
“In my distress, I cried to the LORD. He answered me.” Psalm 120:1 WEBBE
But, what if we made a habit of looking to God for the strength we need, before we need it? Whether it’s a typical day, or what feels like the worst day of your life, God wants us to look to Him for His provision.
Spending time with God, through prayer and reading the Bible, reminds us that we need to spiritually recharge in the Lord each day. He can and does answer our desperate prayers for strength. But we can also fill up with His strength each day as we draw closer and closer to Him.
These prayer points can be excellent starting points for praying for His strength, whether you are praying for an immediate need, praying for the future, or praying for someone else who needs God’s strength.
The themes covered are: Persevering in Trials, Finding Peace in God’s Presence, Overcoming Fear, and Finding Rest in God.
At the end of this post, I’ll share links to free printable prayer sheets on these subjects, which can be helpful to refer to during your own quiet time, or if you are praying with others.
Persevering in Trials
Sometimes our problems can go beyond our typical difficulties. We need God’s strength to help us persevere through trials. Use these prayer points with scriptures to pray through difficult trials for yourself or someone else.
Pray for endurance to result as a product of trials. “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” James 1:2-4
Ask God to help you rejoice, even in the midst of suffering. “Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:3-5
Pray for God to use this trial for His purposes. “But may the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.” 1 Peter 5:10
Ask God for strength to endure. “We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair; pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
Pray that God will remind You of His presence. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.” Isaiah 43:2
Ask God to help you focus on His control over the situation. “I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Pray to persevere while keeping your eyes on Jesus. “Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2
Finding Peace in God’s Presence
When we sit in our own presence, surrounded by our own thoughts, we can easily fall into our own fears, rationalizations, and incorrect views of a situation.
When we focus on God and seek peace in His presence, we often also find the strength we need to get through the situations He’s allowed us to face that day.
Pray through these scriptures and seek God’s peace for you today.
Pray that God will help you seek the peace He offers, and not the peace the world offers. “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.” John 14:27
Ask God to help you surrender your concerns to Him, and exchange them for His perfect peace. “In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
Pray for God to help you receive joy in His presence. “You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.” Psalm 16:11
Ask God to help you keep your mind steadfast on Him. “You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.” Isaiah 26:3
Pray for God to remind You that He is the one who provides peace. “In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me live in safety.” Psalm 4:8 WEBBE
Overcoming Fear
Fear can make us feel weak and unable to do what we are called to do.
Letting God help us overcome our fears will prepare us to be strong in Him.
Even if you are fearful, you can still seek God’s strength! But keeping fear in check can take away some obstacles to serving God where He has you today.
Pray through these prayer points with Bible verses as you look to God for the strength to overcome fear.
Pray that God will deliver you from your fears as you seek Him. “I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.” Psalm 34:4
Ask God to help you live in His spirit of power, love and self-control. “For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7
Pray to trust in God when you are feeling fear. “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” Psalm 56:3
Ask God to comfort You with His presence, even in the darkest valleys. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4
Pray to understand how much you matter to God, and what that means in face of your fears. “Aren’t two sparrows sold for an assarion coin? Not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31
Finding Rest in God
When we are tired, we need rest. We will not grow stronger if we are always depleted and empty.
The same is true spiritually. When we find our rest in God, we can recharge in Him, and grow stronger to serve Him.
Pray through these prayer points about finding rest in God.
Pray that you will find your rest in God, and what He has for you. “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
As you consider your troubles, ask God to help you see His power over all. “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10
Pray that the Lord will help you take Sabbath rest in Him. “There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For he who has entered into his rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from his. Let’s therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience.” Hebrews 4:9-11
Ask God to help you wait on Him for strength and power. “He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; but those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:29-31 WEBBE
Pray to put your trust in God for rest. “My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him. He alone is my rock, my salvation, and my fortress. I will never be greatly shaken.” Psalm 62:1-2
