30+ Bible Verses for September

September written in the sky of an autumn tree setting

September can be a busy month. For some, it’s the start or continuation of a new school year, returning to a routine that may or may not be a welcome change.

For others, it’s a hectic time at work, preparing for the end of the year while still dealing with current projects.

Every month brings its own set of challenges and difficulties, and we do best when we let God equip us with His strong and mighty Word.

The theme for this month is “Living in Christ’s Presence and Purpose.” We’ll focus on Bible verses for September that remind us to focus on living a Christ-centered life of obedience and purpose in Him.

Focus on Christ

These Bible verses for September encourage us to live a life that has Christ at the center of it.

Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”

We often see this Bible verse as encouragement to do anything we have put our mind to. Christ makes us strong, and we should be able to accomplish anything, right?

It is true that our Lord God makes us strong and equips us, yet we also need to look at the Bible verse in context. In Philippians 4:10-12, Paul was talking about the challenges he has had while ministering.

Paul faced humbling and difficult circumstances, as well as times of great abundance. He spoke of being content in both of those circumstances, and probably anywhere in between those two points.

So when Paul says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” he speaks of the Lord giving him contentment and peace no matter what he is going through.

While it might not be what we expect from that verse, it really is a gift. It takes away the perception of us getting through our goals and priorities with God’s help, almost as if He were an assistant.

Instead, it adds a perspective of no matter what circumstance we face, whether it good or bad, we can be content in Christ who strengthens us.

It doesn’t mean that Christ doesn’t strengthen us; there are many Bible verses, like Psalm 29:11, that remind us that He does.

But it is a good reminder that Christ strengthens us not only to do things that glorify Him, but to have an attitude that strengthens us in our faith and trust in Him.

Romans 8:1 – “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”

Romans 8 1

Have you ever struggled with feeling forgiven? Is it hard to accept that God loves you and accepts you even if you don’t live a perfect life?

If you have asked Jesus into your heart and have a personal relationship with Him, then you do not need to struggle with this anymore.

We can find our forgiveness in Him. Will we always feel forgiven? No, but our feelings sometimes mislead us. Relying on our feelings is another form of walking by the flesh.

When we walk by the power of the Holy Spirit, we are including Him in all of our decisions, reactions, and actions. Our Heavenly Father does not condemn us as we walk by the Spirit.

It may also be easier to not feel condemned or unforgiven when we are walking by the Spirit instead of the flesh.

Satan is the accuser (Revelation 12:10), and longs to have us walk in defeat, either hampered in our service and relationship to God, or giving up on one, the other, or both. He loves to see us wrapped up in our feelings of condemnation, convincing ourselves that we cannot be close to God like this.

The Holy Spirit convicts us, but also gives us a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13), and leads us into forgiveness.

We might feel bad because we did something bad, but God gives us a way out as we walk by the Spirit. Satan just wants us to wallow in our “not good enough” feelings.

We aren’t good enough, but our Jesus Christ is, and can lead us out of condemnation into victory.

1 Corinthians 1:30 – “But of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who was made to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption.”

Because of God’s grace and His plan for us, we are in Christ Jesus. Through Him, we have wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.

What a beautiful reminder of these facts, and a reason to give thanks to the Lord each day!

Galatians 2:20 – “I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.”

Living a life focused on Christ means metaphorically dying to your own life.

It is no longer your wants, needs, and desires that must be fulfilled. It means looking to the Lord for His priorities for your life. This doesn’t make us robots, with no personality or individuality.

Instead, it means that we willingly lay aside what we want to pursue what Christ wants, since we can trust Him for His perfect plan for our lives. We are able to do this through Christ living in us!

Ephesians 1:3 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”

Ephesians 1 3

Isn’t it wonderful to see how God has blessed us? Being equipped by the blessing of every spiritual blessing through Christ is such a gift to us.

It’s not like the merit system of this world, where you get good enough to earn something. Nor is it the way some people manipulate, stumble, or trick their way into favorable circumstances.

Instead, it is truly Who you know, and the fact that Jesus is our Savior puts us into the position of receiving every spiritual blessing. Live a life that reflects that today.

Colossians 3:3 – “For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

This is another example of us dying to ourselves metaphorically, so that we can live in Christ.

Being a Christian is life-changing. For some, this will produce a lot of lifestyle changes as well as heart changes, as they lay down a lot of obvious worldly pursuits.

For others, there might be a bigger shift in their attitudes as they start living a life for Christ and not themselves.

Pray that the Lord will help you today to see what hiding your life in Christ means for you.

1 Peter 5:10 – “But may the God of all grace, who called us to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.”

We know that we will struggle in this world. John 16:33 says, “I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.”

Our God, full of grace, will see us through each challenge, using it for His own purposes to “perfect” us in our lives. The English Standard Version of 1 Peter 5:10 says that God will “restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.”

The Lord will make things right according to His will for us, which doesn’t necessarily agree with our will for ourselves. We have another opportunity to trust Him to do what is right for our lives.

Eternal Life and Love of God

We need a Savior! God loves us so much that He made a way for us to know Him and spend eternity with Him. Reflect on these Bible verses for September that show us more about God’s love and eternal life.

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

John 3 16

Perhaps one of the best known verses in the world, John 3:16 sums up the Gospel message succinctly.

God’s love for us is so big that He gave Jesus to die for our sins. If we accept that gift of a personal relationship with Him, we will live eternally with Him in the life beyond this one on earth.

Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

We will never be good enough on our own. Even the best person you know is not good enough to go to heaven without the salvation found in Jesus Christ.

Thankfully, through Christ, we not only have our debt of sins canceled, but also find eternal life in Him.

John 10:28 – “I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

During Jesus’ ministry on earth, He had times where almost everyone loved Him. People loved the idea of miracles, of hope, of the possible fulfillment of prophecy that someone would save them from the harsh leaders over them.

Yet there were other times people would find Him confusing, heretical, and not who they expected. They were looking for a savior of “right now”, someone who could improve their life right away. It’s not unlike what we do today, even sometimes as Christians.

In this passage, people asked Him to tell them plainly if He was Christ. Maybe some asked out of a desire to know Him as Savior, while others, perhaps most, asked to trap Him in controversy.

He plainly admits He is Christ in John 10:25-30. In the middle of that, He offers hope to those who believe in Him.

While we may perish here on earth, we will enjoy eternal life with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Nothing can change that.

1 John 5:11-12 – “The testimony is this, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn’t have God’s Son doesn’t have the life.”

1 John 5 11 12

A cornerstone of the Christian faith is who people say Jesus is. Jesus is the Son of God, and having a personal relationship with Him is our only way to the Lord.

If this is a new concept to you, read this article on Knowing God Personally.

Eternal life is only through Jesus Christ. Thank Him for that today!

Romans 8:38-39 – “For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This is a great encouragement to us as we face various trials and hard times in our lives.

We can feel far from the Lord for various reasons. Sometimes it is our sin, but as we have seen earlier, we can find forgiveness in Him.

But often, it is because of what we are going through, whether it’s a hard time at work, a problem with a family member, or a financial crisis.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God. Remind yourself of this today, no matter what you face.

Ephesians 3:18-19 – “May be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

Think of the person you love most here on earth. Would you even be able to explain it? Many people would say that can’t even put into words how much they love that person.

We can’t even know how much Christ loves us – it surpasses knowledge! But as much as we can, we should get to know the love of Christ, through God’s Word, through prayer, and through serving Him.

1 John 4:9-10 – “By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

1 John 4 9 10

What a beautiful expression of God’s love! He loved us so much that Jesus went to the cross for us.

Propitiation in this context means “satisfaction”, meaning that Christ satisfied, or fulfilled, the debt each one of us had for our sins. We only need to accept that gift to end that debt.

Good Works and the Will of God

September written on a wooden background with fall leaves around

As we seek God’s will and serve Him, we can see in God’s Word how He equips us and accomplishes His perfect will.

These Bible verses for September look at doing good works as well as the will of God.

Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.”

We are the Lord’s creation, and He created us for a purpose. He wants us to do good works as we serve Him. It is not all that we are to the Lord, nor does it earn us our spot in heaven. But it is an important part of our relationship with Him.

Matthew 5:16 – “Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 5 16

Our good works reflect favorably on the Lord. When people wonder why you do something good in a world that just seems to take, you can tell them that you serve others because of your faith in Christ.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – “Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that each person who belongs to God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

We are equipped for our ministry and good works through the word of God. The Bible is inspired of God and instructs us in our Christian walk. Spending time in God’s Word can encourage us in doing good works.

Colossians 1:10 – “That you may walk worthily of the Lord, to please him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

God gave us our salvation through Jesus; it is our privilege to live a life of good works to honor Him. This is a Christian walk that is worthy of the Lord.

Hebrews 13:20-21 – “Now may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, our Lord Jesus, make you complete in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Hebrews 13 20 21

We can often trust in our own strength, hoping that we will be able to achieve our goals or at least get through what we are facing. But there’s a better way.

Our God of peace, who raised Jesus from the dead, will make us complete in every good work to do His will! He will work in us to make us into who He wants us to be. What a comfort and a blessing.

1 Peter 2:15 – “For this is the will of God, that by well-doing you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.”

As Christians in the community, we should be known for doing good. Our definition of good might not match the world at times. But we shouldn’t be known for evil. Our example of good works can shine a light for God.

Romans 12:2 – “Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.”

There can be a struggle within us when we listen to God’s Word while also buying into what the world tells us. It’s like keeping a foot on both sides of an issue. It makes us half-hearted and torn, serving neither side well.

Instead, being informed by our study of God’s Word, and the encouragement of those who preach it and teach it, we are ready to let the Spirit of God renew and transform our minds. It will help us as we seek good and acceptable things that support the perfect will of God.

The Word of God and His Character

While our minds may not be able to fully comprehend God’s character or understand every facet of His Word, He desires for us to dig deeper into the scriptures and prayer to get to know Him.

These Bible verses for September concentrate on God’s Word and His attributes.

Hebrews 4:12 – “For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

13 - Hebrews 4 12

Some people say the Bible is just a book, but that’s not true. It is living and powerful, its words able to make a difference in the heart and soul. Reading scripture is life-changing!

Isaiah 55:11 – “So is my word that goes out of my mouth: it will not return to me void, but it will accomplish that which I please, and it will prosper in the thing I sent it to do.”

The Lord tells us that His Word will accomplish what He desires. We should not take the Word of God lightly, but should study it and embrace it in our daily walk.

Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.”

We can often feel adrift when we are not focused on God, but instead on the many things that the world wants us to place our concern on. We can find our direction and guidance in God’s Word.

John 1:1 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

14 - John 1 1

This Bible verse refers to Jesus as the Word, being both with God and being God Himself. The Bible verse can feel both simple to understand and hard to understand. Matthew Henry’s commentary on John 1 lends some insight.

“The plainest reason why the Son of God is called the Word, seems to be, that as our words explain our minds to others, so was the Son of God sent in order to reveal his Father’s mind to the world.” – Matthew Henry

Jesus is God’s message to us, while also being God. That God would love and care so much for us to do this is beyond our comprehension!

Matthew 24:35 – “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

So many things will not last. There are things in this world we put our faith in for safety, security and stability, like money or people or health.

Yet God’s Word stays constant and true, just as God does. We can put our faith in God and His Word.

Psalm 46:10 – ““Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

The Lord reminds us that He is Lord of all. He deserves our worship and exaltation. In Psalm 46, we are told to take our refuge and find our strength in the Lord, in an ever-changing world. This is a good Bible verse for putting things in perspective during troubling times.

Psalm 16:11 – “You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.”

Psalm 16 11

When we follow the path that might seem right to us, without searching for God’s will through prayer and wise Christian guidance, we can take some fruitless or harmful journeys.

Thankfully, God will guide us as we rely on Him, and in God’s presence we will find joy. We will not necessarily find easy circumstances. But we will find the life that He has designed for us, to bring us closer to Him.

Zephaniah 3:17 – “The LORD, your God, is amongst you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.”

While the context of this is speaking to Jerusalem, we can learn about the love and care that the Lord has for His children. We see that same salvation and love from Him.

Matthew 28:20 – “’Teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.”

Our responsibility for God’s Word is to share it with others. The Lord is with us as we share His message of hope through words, actions, and examples.

Matthew 4:4 – “But he answered, ‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.’” Deuteronomy 8:3
