Bible Verses for June: Embracing God’s Provision

A good place to start when learning more about the provision of God is to understand what God’s provision means, and what it doesn’t mean.

There is always the temptation to twist around Bible verses to fit what we want them to say. It seems to be on the increase when you look at how some Christians talk about finance, business, and prosperity.

For example, when we look at this verse in Philippians 4, we may be tempted to see it as a blank check for whatever we need, claiming it as a promise of God.

Philippians 4:19
My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

5 - Philippians 4 19 - Bible verses for June

But looking at it in context, the Apostle Paul is writing about how the Philippians gave him financial support when no one else was, and that Paul “leaves it to God to make them amends for the kindness they had shown him.” (Matthew Henry)

Is the principle true, that the Lord will provide for every need of ours? Yes it is, as we will see in other verses.

But what this often becomes today is a self-centered view of God providing what we want, according to our schedule, with optional effort on our part.

The point of this life is to start our abundant, eternal life with God. It isn’t to gather up the most possessions, be the most successful, or have the most influence for ourselves.

Looking at Bible verses about God’s provision requires that we expand our understanding beyond our narrow, me-focused, and right-now view of provision.

Examples of God’s Provision in the Bible

A great place to start in understanding God’s provision is to look at these examples of provision from the Bible.

First, we’ll take a look at these Old Testament examples of God’s provision.

The Israelites in the Wilderness. The Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt. Yet because of their disobedience, they could not enter the Promised Land.

Even so, God provided for them in the desert.

Nehemiah 9:21
Yes, forty years you sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing. Their clothes didn’t grow old, and their feet didn’t swell.

This is a miracle over the course of many years. While you might think, “they don’t make them how they used to be!”, there are very few things that can stand up to forty years in the desert.

In most climates, leaving things outside for a year is a great way to ensure that you’ll be throwing it out next year. But their provisions lasted.

God had mercy on them and provided for them throughout this extended time, even after they had briefly worshiped false gods.

Manna from Heaven. Yet another way that we can see God’s provision in the 40 years of the Israelites in the wilderness is how He provided for their food.

Psalm 78:23-25
Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven. He rained down manna on them to eat and gave them food from the sky. Man ate the bread of angels. He sent them food to the full.

He provided this every day; there was no need to hoard it. There was no point to hoarding it, as it would spoil; except for the one day before the Sabbath, where they would gather two days’ worth, and it would not spoil.

This shows God’s great power, and also His compassion for us. We often participate in the provision of our needs, whether it’s through a job, making something ourselves, or finding ways to obtain our essentials.

But sometimes the Lord just rains it down for us! We need to recognize those times and give Him thanks, and tell others of His gracious provision for us.

Abraham and Isaac. In the Old Testament, in Genesis 22, we see Abraham being called to sacrifice Isaac, who Abraham believed was his only chance at God’s promise to him being fulfilled to be a father of a nation.

Abraham had doubted God’s provision before, going along with his wife Sarah to shortcut this process by fathering a child with her maid. We imagine that he learned from this, and wanted to obey God wholeheartedly.

Instead, the Lord stopped him and provided a ram for an offering sacrifice.

Genesis 22:14 WEBBE
Abraham called the name of that place “The LORD Will Provide”. As it is said to this day, “On the LORD’s mountain, it will be provided.”

6 - Genesis 22 14 - Bible verses for June

God’s provision came at the time when His purpose for this trial had been fulfilled. He had passed the Lord’s test for his heart, that Abraham would trust God even when he didn’t understand.

God doesn’t call us to a choice like this, but He does call us to surrender to Him and His timing. He calls us to trust Him and obey even when things don’t make sense. We will see His provision in His way and at the right time.

We also see God’s provision in the New Testament.

Jesus Feeding the 5000: Jesus Christ provided a miracle as He multiplied the loaves and fishes to feed the large crowd who had come to see His miracles. He provided so much that there were leftovers!

The crowd kept pursuing Jesus to find out, asking Him for a sign that they might believe in Him, even citing the manna we mentioned earlier. He answered them by talking about the bread of life.

John 6:35
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

They sought a physical provision of food to be satisfied, and had even received it; but the Lord offered them an even more important thing – satisfying their spiritual hunger.

Seeking God’s Kingdom. In a section of Matthew 6 about worry and anxiety, Jesus speaks to us about our concerns for the future.

Matthew 6:31-33
Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

The Lord doesn’t want us to prioritize our pursuit of our needs first. He instead asks us to seek Him first, and His righteousness. He will take care of the rest.

It’s not an excuse to not take action. Most people will need to work in some way, whether at home or outside the home. But it isn’t our sole focus. Put Jesus at the center of your life, and let everything else fall into its rightful place.

Scriptures about God’s Provision

We can see how God provides graciously for us.

Psalm 23:1 WEBBE
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing.

7 - Psalm 23 1 - Bible verses for June

Psalm 23 is a beautiful psalm that takes us through many ways that God might provide for us. He provides our needs, our rest, our guidance, our comfort, and our dwelling place.

While some might claim verses like Psalm 23:1 as promises to give a shiny, abundant, money-filled life, it’s best to focus on the whole chapter to get context.

The psalmist writes of the valley of the shadow of death and of fearing no evil. These aren’t the easy circumstances that some might promise in a more prosperity-minded provision.

God provides, but it is often through the harder times that we really recognize the provision that He gives us.

God provides what we need materially, but He also provides for us as we serve Him.

2 Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work.

God’s grace abounds for our good works! This is good to know, especially when we feel overwhelmed by the life that God has called us to. Let His grace sustain you as you serve Him.

1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

God provides for us by caring about us. If He did not care for us, He would not want us to give us our worries or to look to Him for what we need.

Our Father God, who loves us, will provide what we need.

Hebrews 13:5
Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”

8 - Hebrews 13 5 - Bible verses for June

God will provide what we need, but sometimes we are upset because He does not provide what we want, or what other people have.

Thankfulness to God can be a great remedy to our discontent. We can look around at what God has given us, who He has put in our life, and the new mercies He provides each day, and be incredibly grateful.

Matthew 6:11
Give us today our daily bread.

This part of the Lord’s Prayer, the example of how Jesus would have us pray, has us asking the Lord for provision for today.

It doesn’t mean that we can’t ask for the future – we can and there are times we should! But when we ask the Lord to provide for the day ahead, we are reminded that we should rely on Him each day.

2 Corinthians 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and God of all comfort.

The Lord also provides great mercy and comfort in our lives.

That doesn’t mean that we will be comfortable, but rather, that He is the source of all comfort. This is an important principle to remember as we look for ways to cope and comfort ourselves that might not honor the Lord.

Let us also remember the peace that our Lord provides to us in prayer.

Philippians 4:6-7

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

9 - Philippians 4 6 7 - Bible verses for June

What a great comfort it is that the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds in Him! We can find our rest in Him.

All of these verses point us back to the truth that the Lord provides for us in all ways – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He is our provider!

We can concentrate on these truths by embracing God’s provision in our daily life.

Be grateful. Keep a gratitude journal to help you recognize God’s provision for you each day. This simple act of reflection on how God blesses you can be a great opportunity to change your perspective.

Be generous. Sometimes we hold too tightly to what we have because we think we don’t trust God to provide any further. Pray about what God would have you give, and obey His leading.
