Bible Verses for April: Hope and Victory Through Jesus
The spring rains we see at the start of the spring season can be a GREAT reminder of the old things being washed away, giving us new beginnings.
We find our very best new beginnings in Christ! Even just one sin separates us from Him, but accepting Him in our heart and trusting in Him gives us new mercies every morning in Him.
The Promise of the Resurrection
As we explore the hope and assurance we have in the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, we see His truth in these beautiful Bible verses.
John 11:25-26 – “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?'”
In this part of John chapter 11, Jesus is speaking to Martha, whose brother Lazarus has died. It looks like Martha wants to ask Jesus to raise Lazarus from the dead. But Jesus can do far more than we can expect or imagine, beyond our present circumstances. As theologian Matthew Henry puts it:
”To enlarge Martha’s expectations, our Lord declared himself to be the Resurrection and the Life. In every sense he is the Resurrection; the source, the substance, the first-fruits, the cause of it. The redeemed soul lives after death in happiness; and after the resurrection, both body and soul are kept from all evil for ever.”
Our hope in Jesus Christ can grow as we truly believe and live this scripture in our lives. Jesus could, and did, perform a miracle for Martha in her circumstances; but He also has done the bigger work of redemption of our souls for eternity.
The guidance, help, and strength that we find today is often through the Holy Spirit in our lives. When we live by the power of the Holy Spirit, He brings us back to the redeemed and holy lives we are to live in Him.
Philippians 3:10-11 – “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed to his death, if by any means I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.”
We have great power to live a life that honors God and is according to His will! We are not weak or defenseless, as we might feel sometimes when troubles and trials come our way. We have strength through the Holy Spirit.
In those trials, we also find the fellowship of his sufferings. The most Holy person to live on earth did not live a life of ease, free of trouble. If we think that a life of prosperity and comfort is the true mark of a godly life, we are sorely mistaken.
While we can suffer because of the consequences of our own sins, we can also suffer because “in this world we will have trouble.” (John 16:33) We can take great comfort that God will use it for our good. (Romans 8:28) And we can endure our suffering, knowing that the Lord is with us.
We can do these things, living in His power but also enduring difficult times, for His glory.
Romans 6:4-5 – “We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will also be part of his resurrection.”
Baptism symbolizes washing the old life away and being born anew in Christ. We do this to show our commitment to Him, giving witness to others of our relationship with Christ. This relationship with Him redeems us, for a life lived in Him now and for eternity.
That eternal life is possible because of the defeat of death by Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:55-57 – “‘Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Our sin, without Jesus, would mean an eternal death, away from God’s presence. Yet we have power over death by the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, because earthly death for believers means that we will be in God’s presence.
Death on earth can be hard and scary. Yet it is not as scary when we know that we have ultimate victory over death by the power of Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ephesians 1:19-20 – “And what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might which he worked in Christ, when he raised him from the dead and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places.”
One aspect that we might not concentrate on as we study the resurrection is the greatness of God’s power to raise Jesus from the dead.
Reflecting on this can be helpful in our Chrsitian walk as we remember that we serve our mighty and powerful God, who is more powerful than anything we can imagine!
Romans 8:11 – “But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
We do not live a powerless life. We have the power of the Holy Spirit within us, God’s Spirit who raised Jesus Christ from the dead. We have the power and strength to live the life which God calls us to lead.
Witnesses of the Resurrection
As we look at the resurrection, it’s helpful to also look at those who witnessed Jesus firsthand after the resurrection.
Luke 24:6-7 – “He isn’t here, but is risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and the third day rise again.”
These angels spoke to this group of women, which included Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James (not Jesus’ mother). They told these women that the prophecy of Jesus’ resurrection had been fulfilled.
Matthew 28:6 – “He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying.”
This parallel account (the same event told by another person) of Luke 24’s event, has an angel tell the women of our Lord’s resurrection. He tells them to go tell the disciples.
The apostles saw Him as well, and boldly proclaimed the great power of the resurrection.
Acts 4:33 – “With great power, the apostles gave their testimony of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Great grace was on them all.”
They had to tell everyone the life-changing truth of Jesus Christ, and His resurrection from the dead!
It’s encouraging to see that Jesus acknowledges those who did not see Him firsthand.
John 20:29 – “Jesus said to him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and have believed.'”
We have not seen Jesus in the flesh, but still believe in Him and His resurrection power. The Lord calls us blessed!
Since we know and believe in His resurrection, we live in hope.
1 Peter 1:3 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
Because the Lord has great mercy upon us, we can live in hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Let us reflect on the great compassion and sacrifice made for us by the grace and love of God!
We do not deserve any of this, yet are afforded this beautiful mercy. Be thankful for God’s love for us today!
Jesus’ Victory Over Sin and Death
Let’s take a closer look at the redemption we find in Jesus, and how the resurrection brought victory over sin.
Romans 5:10 – “For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life.”
Our sin made us enemies of our Holy God. Yet even while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). The wages of our sin would be spiritual death on earth and eternal separation from God.
But His death on the cross paid the price for us; His resurrection gives us power to live a holy life for Him.
Romans 4:25 – “Who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.”
Jesus paid the price for our sins; let us live a life that honors this sacrifice, acknowledging our redemption in Him.
Putting our faith in Jesus Christ, we are united with Him in His resurrection.
Colossians 2:12 – “Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.”
We surrender our lives to God, who resurrects our sin-filled life with forgiveness and grace.
Galatians 2:20 – “I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.”
We often try to hold onto our “old” life when we turn to Christ, giving Him a little corner of our lives and telling Him to stay out of the rest. Yet that is not the life described in Galatians 2:20.
We are to live a life of surrender, giving up our old life to live a life in Christ, by the power of Him. This may mean dramatic outward changes.
But it almost always means dramatic inward changes, of putting God first instead of ourselves, and of living a life for Christ and not ourselves. Our old outlook and philosophies must change if they do not honor Christ. Our priorities must change as we put Christ first.
Romans 8:34 – “Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.”
If you are discouraged by your past or even your present, this is a wonderful scripture to reflect on. People are often quick to remember your past failures and hold them against you. God isn’t like that. He not only has compassion for You, but made a way for your failures to be redeemed.
Jesus intercedes for us, both on the cross, and at the right hand of God. It doesn’t give us license to sin more, but we are offered forgiveness and countless second chances as we fall short of the glory of God.
We have the opportunity to take all these truths we have learned and live in the power of the resurrection.
Living in the Power of the Resurrection
Jesus Christ’s resurrection makes a difference in our daily life! We can live powerful and holy lives in Him, standing strong against sin, and experiencing the grace of God.
This verse from Romans reminds us that we are saved by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Romans 10:9 – “That if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
God raised Jesus Christ from the dead, and will also raise us up.
1 Corinthians 6:14 – “Now God raised up the Lord, and will also raise us up by his power.”
In this passage about immorality, Paul was encouraging the Corinthians not to unite their bodies to sin, being mindful that they are united with Christ. The purpose of the body is not sin.
Our purpose should be to spread the good news of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, so that more people can live in the transformative power of His victory over sin.
2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.”
We may feel like our old self, but we aren’t. We have been made new in Christ and have a fresh start in Him. Let’s live our lives in ways that reflect that.
Revelation 1:18 – “I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades.”
This powerful Bible verse from the book of Revelation underlines the power that Jesus Christ has over death. He has conquered death for us – we will not be separated from God for eternity.
John 14:6 – “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.'”
This beautiful scripture is a great way to wrap up our discussion of these Bible verses about the resurrection. Jesus is our way to salvation, and that’s it.
