4 Tips for Finding Help in the Bible

Because we can always turn to the Bible, it’s important to know how to find Bible Verses for comfort and encouragement.

  • I’ve found that searching on Bible Gateway about my topic of interest is helpful; it’s important to read the verses in context and not just pick out one that needs the meaning of the verses around it.
  • I may ask a friend or my pastor for a Scripture for comfort and encouragement.
  • As a subscriber to the Bible listening app Dwell, I sometimes will bring up a playlist of Bible verses that seems helpful.
  • If I’m in a Bible reading plan already, I proceed with the scheduled reading, and let God show me something out of the day’s reading. At times, it can be spot on with what I’m going through. Other times, it helps shift my mind off my troubles onto something else God wants me to pay attention to.

Bible verses about peace and comfort

The world offers peace via many paths. We can try to find peace through money, people, or possessions, just to name a few. But true, everlasting peace with God comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1

Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

One of my favorite Bible verses about peace mentions that our God is the God of hope! We can find our peace in Him through faith.

Romans 15:13

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

As believers, we are filled with the Holy Spirit, and can reflect the traits to ourselves and  others. Thankfully, one of these characteristics is peace! We can be thankful for this everyday.

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Bible verses about hope in hard times

Life may contain disappointments for us, but hope in God and His plan for us will not disappoint us. We can find hope in Him and His love.

Romans 5:5

And hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

We can hope in many things, but the only one ultimately worthy of our hope is God. We can trust in Him and can hope in hard times.

Psalm 46:10

Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.

The Bible contains many promises from God, and we can trust those promises. We can hope in Him even when difficult times are here.

Hebrews 10:23

Let’s hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful.

Bible verses for comfort and strength

Some of my favorite Bible verses for comfort and strength emphasize resting and trusting in God. Psalm 23 was one of the first ways I learned about God wanting us to rest.

Psalm 23:2-3

He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

It is easier to rest in God’s strength when you look at His provision for you.

Philippians 4:19

My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Our comfort and strength can be found in God, even in the face of great difficulties.

Psalm 46:1-3

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling.

How do you comfort someone with a Bible verse?

Be wise.

Psalm 119:50 tells us, “This is my comfort in my affliction, for your word has revived me.” One of the reasons God gave us His Word is to comfort us during hard times. We can read them ourselves, and also share them with others. But what is the best way to share Bible verses for comfort and encouragement?

I think that being aware of the circumstances – “reading the room,” as some might say, is crucial. Proverbs 27:14 warns us, “He who blesses his neighbor with a loud voice early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse by him.” What you might mean for good, others might take as harm.

Be thoughtful in prayer.

It’s best to pray about what you are going to say to someone who is going through a hard time. I’ve found that fewer words are often the best choice. If it’s in person, it gives them a chance to talk if they need to talk.

And if you are writing, it’s easier to read a short note than a long one, especially if it’s a hard time for them. Some of the Scriptures on this list are short Bible verses for comfort and strength that could be included in a card or a text.

Use the Bible to comfort others.

When someone is going through a loss or a hard time, they desire the hope that the Bible can provide. Romans 15:4 says, “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through perseverance and through encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” The many Bible verses here can be helpful in pointing to the hope that God provides.

Yes, we can, with wisdom and prayer, use the Bible to persuade others in our lives to turn from sin (Hebrews 3:13). But if you are only trying to convict others of sin, and not show them the hope they can find in Jesus Christ, you should pray about and discuss with trusted Christians if you are truly doing what God called you to do.

Someone who has been outside all day in the summer without food or drink doesn’t reach for a tall glass of salted crackers! No, most people crave a glass of ice cold water when they are thirsty and need refreshment. After a day of getting worn down by harsh conditions and little sustenance, it’s important to recharge with the right fuel.

When we find ourselves feeling weary spiritually, it’s important to reach for what will truly sustain us. God’s Word is like a drink of water, refreshing our souls and renewing us.
